You may have already come across one or two of these questions in interviews before. But how do you go about answering them?
TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF
Identify some of your key qualities beforehand, some personal and some professional. Briefly describe your career history, qualifications and skills relevant to the job you are interviewing for.
WHAT ARE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE?
Identify the skills you used in the achievement and quantify the benefit it had to the company. For example: Have researched, implemented, tested and put into production a new payroll system allowing HR department to run with 50% Staff, and giving 100% increase in efficiency.
WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE ABOUT YOUR PRESENT JOB?
This is a trick question; do not speak in a derogatory manner about your previous employer. Realistically if there weren’t negatives then you wouldn’t be leaving, however you can look unprofessional and like you can’t handle pressure (or have other weaknesses) which may compromise your chances. General statements like the size of the company, or it’s progression into certain technologies can be a good answer, showing that you and they were going in different directions, rather than laying blame. Alarmingly, it can be tempting to spill all to a stranger!
WHAT ARE YOUR WEAKNESSES?
Don’t say you do not have any – everyone does. Also, try to stay away from the textbook answers which reveal nothing about yourself: ‘I’m a perfectionist’, or ‘I work too hard’. Be as close to the truth as possible – they will only find out your weaknesses when they take you on – but list ones that you have overcome and how you did that.
TELL ME ABOUT A DIFFICULT SITUATION YOU HAVE OVERCOME
What they are looking for here is to find out what your definition of difficult is, and whether you can show a logical approach to problem solving. Select a difficult work situation which was not of your making, and which can be quickly explained. Explain how you defined the problem, what the options were, why you selected the one you did and what the outcome was. Always end on a positive note.
WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS?
Concentrate on discussing your main strengths. List three or four proficiencies e.g. your ability to learn quickly, determination to succeed, positive attitude, your ability to relate to people and achieve a common goal. You may be asked to give examples of the above so be prepared.
